How the game works

Before play begins, each player takes a question sheet and clips it to a question sheet holder. Each sheet contains a set of 28 questions plus answers. The questions are in four colour-coded categories: Missing Word (orange), Crossword Clues (green), Multiple Choice (blue) and Spelling (yellow). During the game, players throw the dice and move their pieces around the board. If they land on a square bordered by one of the above colours, the player to their right reads a question from the corresponding category on their question sheet. Correct answers earn a scoring token of the appropriate colour and another throw of the dice. If an answer is incorrect, the next player to the left throws the dice to begin his or her turn, and so on. The first player to collect two scoring tokens of each colour is the winner. The game also involves luck and strategy through Word Up cards plus option, penalty and bonus squares.

Levels

The questions are graded into 5 levels, with Level 1 being the easiest and Level 5 the most difficult. If players are of similar levels, each answers questions from the same level. If players are of different levels, each answers questions from their own level. Questions from any level are suitable for all ages.

Language practised

ESL learners practise and develop a wide range of English language skills while playing Word Up. These include reading, speaking and listening to English whenever they are asking or answering questions. Many aspects of English grammar are tested in the Missing Word and Multiple Choice categories, including tense forms, parts of speech and structural awareness. The use of English idioms and phrasal verbs is also frequently tested in these categories. The Crossword Clues category tests and develops both general and more specialised vocabulary, while spelling is tested in its own category (both British and American English). General knowledge is also frequently tested, with questions covering geography, history, science and the arts, etc. In addition, as all speaking during the game should be in English, spontaneous ESL communicative skills are constantly practised.
