How the game works

Before play begins, each player takes a question sheet and clips it to a question sheet holder. Each sheet has 28 questions plus answers. The questions are in four categories: Missing Word (orange), Crossword Clues (green), Multiple Choice (blue) and Spelling (yellow). Players throw the dice and move their pieces around the board. If they land on a square with one of the above colours, the player to their right reads a question from that category on their question sheet. Correct answers earn a scoring token of the same colour and another throw of the dice. If an answer is incorrect, the next player to the left throws the dice to begin his or her turn, and so on. The first player to collect two scoring tokens of each colour is the winner.

Levels

The questions are in 5 levels, with Level 1 being the easiest and Level 5 the most difficult. If players are of similar levels, each answers questions from the same level. If players are of different levels, each answers questions from their own level.

Language practised

While playing Word Up, students will practise and develop a wide range of English language skills. These include reading, speaking and listening when they ask and answer questions. Their grammar is tested in the Missing Word and Multiple Choice categories. Idioms and phrasal verbs are also tested in these categories. The Crossword Clues help students improve their vocabulary, while spelling is tested in its own category. General knowledge is also tested, with questions covering geography, history, science and the arts, etc. And as all speaking during the game is in English, students will automatically improve their speaking skills.
